Babylon Berlin Season Four: Setting the Scene
While some will only have days to wait between watching the end of Babylon Berlin season three and the premiere of the next season, others have patiently waited for four long years to see what awaits chief inspector Gereon Rath and flapper-turned-detective Charlotte Ritter (seasons 1-3 were previously on Netflix).
The opening of season four begins on New Years Eve, 1930. The glitz and glamor of the late 1920s still lingers – especially via business tycoon Alred Nyssen (Lars Eidinger), but a depression-era scene settles in Berlin with the mood darkening even further as the Nazis’ accelerate their march to power.
Watch a quick recap of Seasons 1 – 3 with a taste of what Season 4 will cover:
This season is based on Volker Kutscher’s novel Goldstein where Abraham Goldstein has returned home to Berlin from America to find a stolen jewel that once belonged to his father. Meanwhile pressure increases on Rath and the Red Castle to uphold the rule of law, but a path to justice has some cruel obstacles, some stalwart defenders, and some unfortunate souls caught in the middle.
CAST & CREW
Liv Lisa Fries as Charlotte Ritter
Optimistic, competent and (mostly) respected at the Red Castle, Charlotte seems poised to start 1931 on an upward trajectory. A chance spotting of both her sister Toni at a crime scene and Rath in Nazi uniform puts her career and personal life in upheaval.
Volker Bruch as Inspector Gereon Rath
Still haunted by his past demons, Rath carries on as chief inspector of the Berlin police force. His current assignment is unusually political as he gets caught up in the early power struggles between law enforcement and different factions within the SA (German paramilitary organization who eventually helped Hitler’s rise to power).
Irene Böhm as Toni Ritter
Toni has taken a more wayward path than her sister Charlotte. She’s a scrappy survivor but has a knack for being in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people.
Lars Eidinger as Alfred Nyssen
An arrogant and at times naïve businessman whose excess funds his access to all walks of Germany’s political elite. In a moment of revelry, he accidentally triggers a series of criminal events that impact him on the most personal of levels. However, this doesn’t stop him from forging ahead with his military endeavors.
Hannah Herzsprung as Helga Rath
The widow of Gereon’s brother Anno, former lover of Gereon, and current flame of her benefactor Alfred Nyssen. She’s not naturally comfortable in her new more luxurious surroundings and her mere presence seems to irritate Alfred’s aristocratic mother. Their polite détente does end up shattering in the most dramatic of circumstances.
Ronald Zehrefeld as Walter Weintraub
Weintraub has graduated to bigshot level in the 1930s Berlin underworld and is now in control of both a boxing club complete with gambling ring and the Moka Efti nightclub. His power moves are bold but he gets drawn into a gang war, which raises the pressure on Rath and the rest of the Red Castle to take back the streets of Berlin.
Mark Ivanir as Abraham Goldstein
An American “businessman” who returns to Berlin to retrieve a family heirloom by any means necessary, much to the chagrin of his jeweler uncle who tries to get Abraham to tone down his less-than-legal methods. It’s through Goldstein that hints of a darker antisemitic sentiment is taking hold in Berlin.
Hanno Koffler as Stennes
Ambition meets blunt force as Stennes jockeys for position within the SA with the help of Gereon Rath. Impatient with the Nazi’s disciplined restraint Stennes tries to wrench political power from Hitler’s grasp.
STARRING
VOLKER BRUCH | LIV LISA FRIES
Berlin in the Roaring Twenties: It is a metropolis for those with talent and ambition, for those in a hustle. It is BABYLON BERLIN. But beneath the glittering surface, the impoverished masses strive for a better life. It is a time of organized crime and political extremism. The old militaristic elites have not yet abdicated, while an even more dreadful monster starts flexing its muscles.
