Taking place over two distinct time periods, The Promise (Newen) explores how unsolved cases affect the lives of police officers as it follows the story of Sarah Castaing (Sofia Essaïdi, Murder In…), a young police captain faced with the disappearance of a child. As she begins her investigation, it is revealed that this new case may have connections to an unsolved abduction from 20 years ago – one which took the life of her policeman father, Pierre (Oliver Marchal, Murder In…). Beyond the crime story, the series explores the father-daughter relationship and the unfulfilled promise that Pierre Castaing made to the family of the missing child – a promise which Sarah takes up to clear her father’s name. The six-part series boasted record viewing figures when it was first aired on TF1 in France in 2020, a tribute to the talented women behind the scenes – writer Anne Landois (Spiral) and director Laure de Butler (Mongeville).
