Mongeville (Mediawan) is a highly popular and long-running detective series that originally premiered in France in 2013. Nine years and over 26 feature-length episodes later, Antoine Mongeville has cemented his status as one of France’s most popular TV detectives, second only (perhaps) to Simon Magellan himself!

Francis Perrin (Surveillance) stars as the title character, a former investigating judge who meets Axelle Ferrano (Marie Mouté), a young, ambitious officer from the judicial police. Mongeville, for whom “retirement” means investigating from home rather from the office, is interested in recent disappearances of several young women in the area, while Ferrano is disturbed by the inexplicable suicide of the local businessman. Could the two cases possibly be linked?

Unlike Magellan’s fictional setting of Saignac, Mongeville mostly takes place in the “real world” – Bordeaux! The setting is obviously stunning, and the cases are cozy and comfortable – as “cozy” and “comfortable” as a show about violent death can be, obviously. But this entry in the MHz Choice mystery catalogue plants its flag firmly in the genre we have dubbed “bloodless crime”. Meaning: the excellent Paris Police 1900 it most certainly is not! But if you like addictive, lighter mysteries à la Murder In… and Magellan, then Mongeville is definitely for you!
