In a small town in northern Sweden, the prospect of a new mine leads to conflict between environmentalists and the residents who envisage it as the way to a new and better future. Retired cop Erik Bäckström (reluctantly) agrees to handle security for the mining company, and is soon confronted with a mysterious death. Torn between his sense of justice and his loyalty towards the town and its people, Erik faces pressure on all sides to bring the case to a speedy close, even as he finds evidence that points to murder…
Rolf Lassgård (A Man Called Ove) stars as Erik, reprising a role he originally played in the feature films The Hunters (1996) and False Trail (2011). But if you’ve never seen those movies, fear not – The Hunters TV series is a completely standalone story, and was designed to be watched without any knowledge of its forebears. Here, Rolf plays a gruff but loveable man with a fierce sense of right and wrong who isn’t afraid to let people know how he feels. It’s an engaging performance, combining the brilliant, analytical mind of Sebastian Bergman and the wistful, brooding LMJ from Death of a Pilgrim and The Fourth Man. Plus, he has a dog named Bella and dogs rule.
The Hunters Season 1 is available on MHz Choice. A second season is currently in production, but no word yet on release date for that.
