Amid the mayhem, Aldo Moro is kidnapped and imprisoned for 55 days by the far-left guerrilla group, the Red Brigades. Finally his corpse is found abandoned in the trunk of a car in the centre of Rome. Writer-director Marco Bellocchio weaves together news archives, Moro’s letters from captivity and testimonies in a multifaceted study of irreconcilable ideals, moral duty, political expediency, family anguish – and bitter betrayal.
