Season 2 of the Swedish Wallander series marks a significant turning point for Krister Henriksson’s interpretation of Henning Mankell’s iconic detective. Created by the late Swedish crime novelist, Kurt Wallander is the weary, intuitive police inspector at the heart of a bestselling series of novels set in and around the southern Swedish town of Ystad.

Henriksson’s Wallander debuted in 2005 with an adaptation of Mankell’s novel “Before the Frost” and continued with 12 new feature-length stories. Season 1 introduced a more contemporary take on the character, with Wallander balancing increasingly complicated cases with his troubled relationship with his daughter Linda, played by Johanna Sällström. Linda joins the Ystad police force, working alongside her father while establishing herself as a detective in her own right.

Sällström’s performance became one of the emotional anchors of that first season. Her death in February 2007 at the age of 32 profoundly affected Henriksson, who later described their relationship as being almost like father and daughter. Linda’s death is also reflected in the story going forward, with Season 2 taking Wallander in a somewhat different direction. Rather than simply replacing the missing character, the new season gives Kurt a more settled, reflective outlook as he tries to move forward with his life in 13 feature-length episodes. Mankell’s own materials noted that Wallander always dreamed of living by the sea and having a dog. He finally has both in Season 2 and the dog’s name is Jussi!

Season 2 also introduces several important new regulars. Lena Endre (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) joins as prosecutor Katarina Ahlsell, transferred from Stockholm to Ystad, while Sverrir Gudnason (Those In Power) co-stars as young police officer Pontus Höijer and Nina Zanjani (soon to be seen in Beck Season 10) plays fellow new recruit Isabell. They join returning colleagues Martinsson, Nyberg, Svartman, Ebba and pathologist Karin as Wallander faces a fresh run of challenging cases.
