This impeccably styled period drama is based on the true story of restauranteur Kurt Haijby’s (Sverrir Gudnason) affair with King Gustav V (Staffan Göth) of Sweden. The series spans the 1930s – 1950s and transitions from a love story to the unjust consequences of avoiding a public scandal. Those consequences fall on the head of Haijby, who while technically unfaithful to his wife, doesn’t seem to deserve getting deported to Nazi Germany or being put on trial in Sweden for blackmailing the King. The miscarriages of justice are chronicled alongside the forbidden love Kurt and Gustav have for each other and offer a memorable depiction of one of Sweden’s biggest scandals.
