The new Belgian drama Under Fire (France TV) is set in the seaside town of Ostend, which recently has started to cater more to resort-minded visitors than long-time residents. The East Bank Fire Station is undergoing a change as well with pressure from the regional zone commander to fall in line with a more cookie-cutter approach to fighting fires. The team has been led by Lieutenant Patrick Sinnaeve (Sam Louwyck) for decades, but after stepping down he is replaced by the younger Dominique Meersman (Lien de Graeve, Professor T) and things start going sideways right away. There are big personalities to deal with – Sergeant Orlando Foncke (Louis Talpe) being the thorniest one – but then there are the even bigger life or death actions the team of firefighters make. This series has no shortage of dramatic attempted rescues. Once the sirens blare you are in for an intense and unpredictable ride. Under Fire premieres on July 2, 2024.

The sites and tastes of France and beyond

France is on the mind of the world this summer as the Olympics are scheduled to begin this July in Paris. Whether you’ve visited recently or have experienced France only through the small screen, MHz Choice will take you beyond the crowds in and around Paris with two documentaries from France TV – Versailles: Life Behind the Scenes (July 16, 2024) and Eiffel Tower: Life Behind the Scenes (July 23, 2024). The series explores the unseen workforce who make these world class sites operate with precision and beauty. You meet the curators, gardeners, electricians and mechanics, as well as the mountaineers, watchmakers and painters.  

Beyond the tourist attractions of France, there are several more travel documentaries premiering this month on MHz Choice that explore the food of Europe, famous hotels and a whirlwind tour of the best of Switzerland.  

At Our Neighbour’s Table (Germany, Authentic GmbH, July 9, 2024) shows the full ‘soup to nuts’ process of making local meals in rural France, Spain, southern Italy and islands off the coasts of Germany and Denmark. 

Legendary Grand Hotels (July 30, 2024) showcases famous hotels in Israel, Paris, Berlin and Geneva. 

Grand Tour of Switzerland (July 30, 2024) travels through 11 UNESCO World Heritage sites, snowy peaks of the Alps and 22 gorgeous lakes.

Returning Series

July also brings back some long-running series and a two-episode prequel introduction to the great character of Captain Marleau (July 23, 2024). New seasons of both Alice Nevers (July 9, 2024) and The Sea Beyond (July 9) pick up where things left off. For The Sea Beyond, be sure to mark your calendars since the series will only be available on MHz Choice through July 31, 2024. 

Murder In… also continues with a new episode each week. July 30 is technically the start of season 13 with episodes set in Cassis, Saint-Malo, Normandy, The Verdon, Champagne, Valbonne, Chantilly, Cantal, Bayeux, Montauban, Meaux and Chateau-Thierry

And Babylon Berlin continues Season 4 with two new episodes each week in July.

More Dubbed Seasons – Don’t worry we also have subtitled versions!

For those watching (or re-watching) series dubbed in English there is a new collection of Murder In…Dubbed on July 9, 2024. You can find the original subtitled counterparts for all episodes of Murder In…(Dubbed) here. Also, the seventh season of perennial MHz Choice favorite Spiral (July 23, 2024) and Prisoner (July 2) will now have versions available that are dubbed in English.

ICYMI (In Case You Missed it)

Since welcoming the Topic catalog into MHz Choice, we see how much you’re enjoying some of the newfound series like The Killing, Arctic Circle, White Sands and Off Season to name a few. With so much to peruse through we wanted to highlight a couple of stand-out shows that may have slipped under the radar. Both the Danish Follow the Money and the Swedish Dough grapple with the consequences of big piles of cash. Sometimes it’s an intriguing paper trail leading to a web of crime. Other times it can corrupt even those with good intentions. In either scenario there are intriguing plot lines and strong characters to get attached to.

Dough

For when you want a thriller, but also need a bit of comedic relief. This Swedish series follows two women from very different economic and social classes who become dangerously linked due to a missing bag of money. Bonus: the soundtrack to the series is a sonic journey. 

Follow the Money

The Danish series is more of a traditional crime drama. This series is for lovers of financial crime dramas and slick cat-and-mouse thrillers. From the producers of The Killing, this series opens with detective Justesen investigating clean-energy company Energreen, and its money-hungry CEO.
