Season 3 brings us to gloomy Kiel, Germany, where U-boats are built and readied for service. The war’s wear and tear on the German Navy is apparent. Kiel is accurately depicted as a giant shipyard under frequent Allied bombing. Finding an able crew has become almost desperate, and two new characters are pressured into joining the Navy as the only alternative to “the camps” or the Eastern Front. Seasoned officer Ehrenberg (Franz Dinda) is tormented by the events of previous seasons and becomes increasingly desperate to prepare the severely inexperienced new CO Franz Buchner (Konstantin Gries). Ehrenberg and Buchner’s mission is made more difficult by a formidable foe in British Commander Swinburne (Ray Stevenson, Thor, Ahsoka), who has more advanced naval technology and is relentless.

Meanwhile, the Gestapo villain of the previous two seasons, Hagen Forster (Tom Wlaschiha, Game of Thrones), shows up in sunny Portugal to investigate the murder of a comrade. The seemingly high society vacation-land of Lisbon is in direct contrast to the horrors of war both Forster and we viewers know to be happening in the background. Forster is quickly at the center of various corruption webs and efforts to thwart Nazi ambitions. As with previous seasons, the nuanced motivations of all characters evolve as the episodes go on. Fans will not be disappointed in the twists and turns on both land and sea.
