Legendary Italian auteur Marco Bellocchio’s Exterior Night streams February 18th, 2025 in the U.S. and Canada on MHz Choice!

Legendary Italian director Marco Bellocchio (The Traitor, Kidnapped: The Abduction of Edgardo Mortara) makes his TV debut with the six-part limited series Exterior Night (Fremantle). This dramatic re-telling of the 1978 kidnapping and assassination of former Italian prime minister Aldo Moro by the Red Brigades stars Fabrizio Gifuni (My Brilliant Friend) as Moro and Toni Servillo (The Great Beauty) as Pope Paul VI. In 1978, Italy is a country torn apart by political strife: a new government supported by the Communist Party is about to take power, led by Aldo Moro’s Christian Democratic Party. On the day Moro is to be sworn in as the new prime minister, he is kidnapped in a deadly ambush that kills his entire police escort. The 55 days that follow – 55 days seared into Italy’s collective consciousness – bring political machinations, controversial negotiations and intentions both good and bad. As Luke Higgs wrote in his review in “The Film Stage” – “With a riveting pace, it’s a compelling interpretation of real history, and the more philosophical ruminations on people and politics, which reach far beyond the specific time and place in question.”
