Some scenes stick in your head. The two characters in this First Look – the troubled First Lady Elisabeth Marjorie (Carole Bouquet) and the washed-up, former Interior Minister Hussan (Olivier Rabourdin) are just two old friends talking… or so it seems. The heartbreak is the avoidance – what they are not talking about.  They’re not mentioning terrible things they both know about – and by the time you get to this point in Spin Season 2 you know them, too.

Instead, they stick to what is safe and beautiful: looking back over the long arc of their friendship and decades of loving and serving Alain. Of all the characters in Spin, they are the two who have shown him the most loyalty and he and they know it. They’re also two people looking at the carnage caused in their lives by fate, their own choices and by aligning themselves to a man driven by such political ambition. It’s sparely written and riveting  – it reminds one of Chekhov, where there’s so much underneath and the scene really isn’t about what the characters are talking about.

My humble opinion: no one does relational dramas like the French.
