Andrea Camilleri, beloved author of the Detective Montalbano mystery series, has died at age 93.

Andrea Camilleri, one of the world’s most prolific and beloved novelists, screenwriters and directors has passed away at the age of 93. We at MHz Networks have often said that we are the house built by Detective Salvo Montalbano, Camilleri’s most famous creation. We appreciate all of his contributions to the world of literature and are saddened by his passing.

If you don’t know Camilleri and his Montalbano, or simply want to revisit him and his creation, we are making The Snack Thief and Montalbano and Me available for anyone to watch for free. The Snack Thief is the first of the 34 TV adaptations starring Luca Zingaretti and Montalbano and Me: Andrea Camilleri is a documentary about his life, writing and the irascible detective who captured the hearts of readers and viewers around the world.

E alla fine mi hai spiazzato ancora una volta e ci hai lasciato. Nonostante le notizie sempre più tragiche, ho sperato fino all’ultimo che aprissi gli occhi e ci apostrofassi con una delle tue frasi, tutte da ascoltare, tutte da conservare. E invece è arrivato il momento di ricordare. Di cercare le parole per spiegare chi sarà per sempre per me Andrea Camilleri. Un Maestro prima di tutto, un uomo fedele al suo pensiero sempre leale, sempre dalla parte della verita' che ha raccontato tutti noi e il nostro paese. Mancherai. È inevitabile, è doveroso. Per la tua statura artistica, culturale, intellettuale e soprattutto umana. Le tue parole resteranno sempre con la stessa semplicità e con l'immensa generosità e saggezza con cui le hai condivise, da mente libera e superba quale sei. Ma soprattutto mancherai a me perché in tutti questi anni meravigliosi in cui ho incrociato la mia vita con quella del commissario, mi sei stato amico. Ho avuto la strana sensazione che bastasse un tuo tratto di penna a cambiare la mia vita. Ho vissuto accanto a te, nel tuo mondo, quello che avevi creato, quello che ti apparteneva perché uno scrittore non può che riportare se stesso nelle cose che scrive. E ho imparato tantissimo. Il rispetto per le persone, tutte, per se stessi, e per le persone deboli. Perchè il tuo commissario è così che la pensa. A volerti bene no. Quello già sapevo farlo dai tempi dell’accademia, quando non ci trattavi da allievi, ma piuttosto da colleghi. Ho imparato che il valore delle persone non c’entra nulla con quello che guadagnano, con le posizioni che ricoprono, con i titoli che adornano il loro cognome: le persone si valutano per quello che sono. Adesso te ne vai e mi lasci con un senso incolmabile di vuoto, ma so che ogni volta che dirò, anche da solo, nella mia testa, “Montalbano sono!” dovunque te ne sia andato sorriderai sornione, magari fumandoti una sigaretta e facendomi l’occhiolino in segno di intesa, come l’ultima volta che ci siamo visti a Siracusa. Italian broadcaster RAI, for whom Camilleri directed and wrote numerous series, will be offering special programming honoring Mr. Camilleri across all of its networks.

Italian police tweeted: “An affectionate arrivederci to Andrea #Camilleri. The Commissario #Montalbano has revealed so much of our jobs, bringing to light the humanity of policemen always at the service of the community. We will miss you, Maestro.”

Internationally known Italian pop singer Emma Marrone expressed her condolences with a simple, heartfelt message of farewell.
