April is a big month for fans of International TV. Not only does MHz Choice have a number of big new and returning series, but most of the catalog from Topic with powerhouses like The Killing, Pagan Peak and Arctic Circle will be available to watch on MHz Choice.
In case that’s not big enough news, to name just a few of what else is coming to MHz Choice in April, there is the mega-hit period crime drama Babylon Berlin, returning fan-favorite Murder In…, Italian drama Monterossi, and the Nordic Noir-est of crime dramas, Bordertown.
Prestige Dramas
The fictional plot of the German mega-hit Babylon Berlin is set within the very real cultural and political setting of 1929 Berlin. And WHAT a setting it is: Seedy yet glitzy, roaring yet tumultuous, beautiful yet menacing. These contradictions collide inside Berlin’s Vice squad when new officer Gereon Rath (Voker Bruch) joins Chief Inspector Bruno Wolter (Peter Kurth: Tatort, The Typist) in a routine raid, which spirals into a broader exposure of the city’s underworld. Gereon is helped by Charlotte “Lotte” Ritter (Liv Lisa Fries) who is a police clerk by day and something more risque at night. Together they begin to unravel the broader mystery before them while scratching the surface of an increasingly dangerous political undercurrent. Season 1 debuts April 16 with three more seasons coming this year.
Equally atmospheric but set in the present day port city of Le Havre, Haven of Grace is a French Noir crime drama premiering April 9. The Leprieur family is fully entwined and practically synonymous with the business of the docks. Patriarch Pierre Leprieur (Olivier Gourmet) is a dock worker and former union organizer who has spent his career as a bulwark against the dangerous drug traffickers who use the docks (and their workers) for illicit profits. His sons meanwhile are not as law-abiding as their father or their sister Emma (Margot Bancilhon), a Parisian lawyer. The lines between criminal and law-abiding become blurrier over the course of the six episodes as all three siblings navigate a series of events with increasing impact on the family.
A Treat for Fans
For those who like a little scenery with compelling mysteries we have good news, better news and the best news. Let’s start with the good… Pacific Criminal, the French series set on the stunning island of New Caledonia returns April 23 with 20 new episodes, rolling out weekly with two episodes at a time.
The better news is the return of a new season of Murder In… on April 30. Settings include the seaside locations of Dinard, Lérins Island, Guadeloupe, Béarn and more locations from around France to be announced.
The BEST news is that subsequent seasons will follow, allowing MHz Choice to premiere a brand-new episode of Murder In… every week for the rest of 2024! And if that’s not enough, a special dubbed collection of Murder In… favorites will also debut on April 30.
A New German Thriller
On the heels of the popular Divided We Stand is another thriller set in post-reunification Germany. The Roots of Evil, premiering April 30, takes place in 1993 when a body is found in the woods of a former border area. Inspector Ulrike Bandow (Henriette Confurius), hailing from the former GDR (German Democratic Republic) and her new West German colleague Koray Larssen (Fahri Yardim: Tatort) are the lead investigators in a murder of a young girl. The evidence points to the possibility of a serial killer, but the case gradually becomes more personal for the two lead detectives who each may be hiding crucial information from each other.
New Nordic Noir
The classic Danish police drama Unit One featuring Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal, Casino Royale, Fantastic Beasts) will debut April 2. The series follows an elite yet ragtag police unit who are tasked with only the toughest cases. The team is led by Ingrid Dahl (Charlotte Fich: Borgen, The Bridge) who is as cool as a cucumber under pressure in contrast to detective Allan Fischer (Mikkelsen) who is always on the move with palpable energy. Rounding out the group are detectives Jens Peter (Waage Sandø) who is Ingrid’s trusted number two, the thoughtful Thomas La Cour (Lars Byrgmann: Dicte) and the reliable junior detective Gaby Levin (Trine Pallesen: The Killing).
Also this month, the dark Finnish crime drama Bordertown returns on April 16. Kari (Ville Virtanen) and Lena (Anu Sinisalo) work to solve cases in a small town on the Finnish/Russian border, starting with a double murder that is not as straightforward as it initially seems.
Returning Italian Drama
Also this month we welcome back the jaded TV writer turned accidental detective Carlo Monterossi. This popular Italian drama returns with new charming and witty mysteries to solve in Monterossi Season 2, premiering April 9.
