Happy 4th!

Before we begin, an important update:
Last year’s “Happy Fourth” blog centered around the theme of American guest characters on MHz Choice shows – and the (non-American) actors who play them! We are thrilled to point out that this year, we have an actual American American actor playing an American supporting character in one of our shows! The program in question is the Rolf Lassgård miniseries The Fourth Man – a follow-up to the very popular Death of a Pilgrim – and it features Paul Guilfoyle as CIA Agent Mike “The Bear” Liska. Born and raised in Boston, Guilfoyle is best known as Captain Jim Brass in the original CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and he brings a refreshing authenticity to the role of a gruff American spook. Shall we celebrate this casting coup with a patriotic chant? Of course we shall. All together now: USA! USA! USA!
Next year, we’d like to see other former (perhaps slightly lower profile) CSI cast members appearing in MHz Choice shows. Surely there’s some great new (for example) Norwegian police procedural just screaming out for a patriotic guest star turn from that guy who used to play CSI Tech Murphy, right? (What do you mean, you don’t remember CSI Tech Murphy?)

Hot Dog: Flemming
MYSTERY | GERMANY | GERMAN WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | TV-MA
A slick, fast-paced crime drama with serious rom-com undertones, Flemming has quietly become the 4th most-watched series on MHz Choice so far this year. It’s one of those shows that grows on you, with characters and relationships that morph and deepen with each episode. So if you haven’t yet sampled this German treat, what are you waiting for? All three seasons (22 episodes) are streaming right now on MHz Choice!

Apple Pie: Arne Dahl Season 2
DRAMA – CRIME | SWEDEN | SCANDINAVIAN CRIME FICTION | SWEDISH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | TV-MA
From the New York Times: “Season 2 of Arne Dahl is more polished – brighter and tighter – but offers the same rewards of copious investigative detail, numerous bloody deaths and lightly clichéd but pleasantly performed personal drama.” Sounds great to us – and the first season is pretty darn good too!

Fireworks: Anti-Mafia Squad
DRAMA – CRIME | ITALY | ITALIAN WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | TV-MA
Some advice before plunging into Anti-Mafia Squad: Keep in mind that no matter what’s happening in the scene, when men roll up on motorbikes, it’s not good. (Longtime MHz viewers first learned this during The Octopus). Secondly, if you like explosions/gun battles, you will enjoy this series. Thirdly, the Italians can’t seem to help themselves from creating likable ensembles and this series is no exception. So the story isn’t edgy or one of unremitting tension, but bounces back and forth between shadow and light, drama and comedy. Season 2 features Peppino Mazzotta (Fazio from Detective Montalbano) as a Calabrian Mafioso don, and he is fantastic as always.

Liberté, égalité, fraternité: Spiral Season 6
DRAMA – CRIME | FRANCE | FRENCH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | TV-MA
Police captain Laure Bertraud returns to work as she and her team begin a complex new investigation after a human torso is discovered in a pile of garbage in the 20th arrondissement in Paris. Meanwhile, a high profile criminal trial tempts ambitious lawyer Joséphine Karlsson, and Judge Roban faces a health crisis. Catch up on all episodes so far, and get ready for the Season 6 finale premiering July 10, 2018!
