Marta Russo, a 22-year-old student at Sapienza University in Rome, was shot and killed on the campus grounds on May 9th, 1997. The murder and subsequent investigation and trial captivated all of Italy.
Marta Russo: Murder at Rome University (Videoplugger) is a true crime documentary told in Marta’s own words from her own diaries, which were found by her sister Tiziana a few years after the murder. “This is a documentary that arises from the challenge of starting from a painful act like death to tell the story of life, instead of following the usual crime track,” explained director Simone Manetti. “[It is] an emotional story to really tell who was behind Marta’s photo. We approached all the archive material and the news coverage, essential for reconstructing the social aspect of those years.”
