This month on MHz Choice brings Danish thrillers, Finnish spies and even more Murder In…
June also brings returning series including the North American premiere of Babylon Berlin season 4 and more from Finland, Italy and Denmark.
New Series
Kicking off June’s lineup of series is the classic Danish thriller The Eagle (DR) on June 4, 2024.We first meet Hallgrim Hallgrimsson aka “The Eagle” (Jens Albinus, Borgen) on his way home to Iceland to visit his dying mother. Sudden dramatic events prevent him from getting home as he’s swept into being the lead investigator for a new unit specializing in cross-border organized crime. Hallgrim excels in his role but he is also prone to panic attacks. With reluctance he begins to unravel the mysteries of his past over the course of the season. An ensemble cast compliments Hallgrim and includes: Thea Nellemann (Ghita Nørby) an international law expert serving as the chief constable of the new unit; Nazime Emre (Janus Bakrawi, The Killing) a street-smart cop who knows Hallgrim from a past mission to Palestine; Marie Wied (Marina Bouras, When the Dust Settles) a high profile attorney and love interest for Hallgrim; Villy Frandsen (Stig Lommer), an expert on financial crime whose personal wealth is a point of pride; the workaholic Michael Kristensen (David Owe); Ditte Hansen (Susan Annabel Olsen), a forensic expert and single mom. If you are enjoying Unit One, this is a series to put on your watch list.
Also debuting this month is the Finnish spy comedy-drama Stop Nyqvist (YLE) on June 18, 2024. Aleksis Nyqvist (Antti Tuomas Heikkinen) is a press intern at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and not exactly the most well regarded of employees. Mishaps and political machinations suddenly thrust him into the seemingly important role as head of Finland’s new secret service. Nyqvist might appear to be a puppet leader – or at least that’s why he was put in charge, but things quickly get out of hand resulting in a political crisis. The delicate politics of sharing a border with Russia is serious business, but Stop Nyqvist approaches the subject with a distinctly Finnish sense of humor – smart and delightful. (Note that the series was produced in 2022, prior to Finland joining NATO).
Smorgasbord of Returning Series
June marks the return of a range of series from depression-era Berlin to picturesque Tuscan flower fields.
Some fans have been waiting over four years for a new season of Babylon Berlin, which is set to premiere on June 25, 2024 (The first three seasons are now streaming on MHz Choice and previously streamed on Netflix). Season 4 does not disappoint as Gereon Rath (Volker Bruch) and Charlotte Ritter (Liv Lisa Fries) lead us into early 1930s Berlin. The glitz and glamor of the late 1920s still lingers – especially via business tycoon Alred Nyssen (Lars Eidinger), but a depression-era scene settles in Berlin with the mood darkening even further as the Nazis’ accelerate their march to power. Season 4 is based on Volker Kutscher’s novel Goldstein where Abraham Goldstein has returned home to Berlin from America to find a stolen jewel that once belonged to his father. The search leads him from his Jewish relatives in the Scheunenviertel to the Nyssen family, sparking a gang war in the process. Meanwhile Rath is tasked with settling the gang war while others are attempting to uphold the rule of law by undermining Hitler’s SA, a paramilitary organization associated with the Nazi party.
Watch to catch up on season’s 1-3 below! In addition to the German subtitled version, dubbed episodes of season four will also be available beginning June 25, 2024.
Decidedly lighter in atmosphere, the second season of Fosca Innocenti (Banijay Rights) takes us to present day Italy in the idyllic Tuscan city of Arezzo on June 18, 2024. When she’s not galloping on a horse amongst sunflowers on her family estate or with her handsome boyfriend Cosimo (Francesco Arca, Wake Up My Love, The Promised Life), deputy police chief Fosca (Vanessa Incontrada, Captain Maria) is busy being superb at sniffing out false leads and suspicious alibis. Over four new feature-length episodes, mysteries are solved while both she and inspector Rosa Lulli (Cecilia Dazzi) grapple with ups and downs in their respective love lives.
Also returning in June are new seasons of fan-favorite Nordic Noir series Unit One (June 11, 2024) and Bordertown (June 4, 2024). In its final season, Bordertown (Finland, Federation International) Kari Sorjonen (Ville Virtanen) continues to investigate dark and suspenseful crimes in the face of personal tragedy.
More Dubbed Seasons
(Don’t worry we also have subtitled versions!)
For those watching (or re-watching) series dubbed in English there are two additional seasons of hit series to add to the calendar this month. The third season of Finnish thriller Arctic Circle (June 11, 2024), and the sixth season of perennial MHz Choice favorite Spiral (June 18, 2024) will now have versions available that are dubbed in English. For all seasons of Arctic Circle and Spiral, the subtitled versions will always be an available choice.
