Another all-new episode of Tatort: Borowski premieres this week on MHz Choice – with a very familiar face showing up! Yes, that’s right, it’s Peter Haber playing a ship’s first officer opposite Axel Milberg’s Klaus Borowski – and he speaks flawless German in it. In fact, Peter Haber is a native German speaker – his father was German, his mother was Swedish and he grew up in both Sweden and Germany. He splits his professional career between Sweden and Germany too, on stage, screen and TV. So let’s dig a little deeper and look at some of the very different characters he plays in various MHz Choice series…

Tatort: Borowski – Man Overboard

DRAMA – CRIME | GERMANY | GERMAN WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | TV-14

What’s it about?
Returning from a trip to Sweden on a ferry, detective Klaus Borowski is approached by the ship’s first officer after the captain goes missing…

Who does Peter play in it?
Peter plays First Officer Björndahl, a former captain who lost his commission after a tragic sailboat accident – and a chief suspect in the captain’s disappearance!

Is he anything like Martin Beck?
No. Björndahl has a serious drinking problem, so the character’s more “Neighbor-esque” than “Martin Beck-ish” – yes, we realize we’re just making up adjectives here – but with a darker edge.

The Inspector and the Sea – In a Lonely Place

MYSTERY | GERMANY | GERMAN WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | TV-14

What’s it about?
An international group of archeology students are working on the excavation sites of Gotland, researching finds from the Viking Age. But then the unthinkable happens: the body of one of the students is discovered, seemingly struck down by a Viking ritual called the Triune death. Inspector Anders finds himself faced with multiple suspects as he begins his investigation, and then more deaths occur – victims of the ancient rituals of the Vikings…

Who does Peter play in it?
Peter plays archeology professor Staffan Mellgren, and of course he’s the prime suspect! He also serves the useful plot function of explaining all the ancient Viking rituals that seem to be happening all over Gotland.

Is he anything like Martin Beck?
Not much like Martin Beck at all. He’s kind of a creepy character. Peter’s performance is terrific, though: loose, naturalistic and sporting a very professorial beard!

Enemy’s Enemy

DRAMA – CRIME | SWEDEN | SCANDINAVIAN CRIME FICTION | SWEDISH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | TV-14

What’s it about?
The year is 1990. Someone is killing off Swedish military officers and making it look like the work of Soviet agents. Commander Carl Hamilton, Sweden’s top intelligence agent, is assigned to crack the case – and to prevent a full-scale war with the Russians!

Who does Peter play in it?
A very young Peter stars as Swedish super-spy Carl Hamilton in this eight-part series based on the novel by international bestselling author Jan Guillou. Think John le Carré meets James Bond.

Is he anything like Martin Beck?
Not in the least! (Sensing a pattern here?) No one could be further away from the aesthetic of Martin Beck than Commander Carl “Chainsaw” Hamilton, and the fact that Peter can successfully portray two such diametrically-opposed characters shows what a gifted actor he is.

Beck

MYSTERY | SWEDEN | SCANDINAVIAN CRIME FICTION | SWEDISH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | TV-MA

What’s it about?
He’s got no style, he’s got no flash and he’s squarely in middle age. But Swedish detective Martin Beck is good at one thing: methodically catching criminals so that they can be put away for a long time. His tightly-wound partner, Gunvald, is his opposite: an impulsive man who cuts a dashing figure, is in no way politically correct and who never met a boundary he didn’t leap across.

Who does Peter play in it?
Peter plays Gunvald. No, just kidding, he plays Martin Beck.

Is he anything like Martin Beck?
Pretty much, yeah.
