Popular German crime comedy Homicide Hills (Beta Films) sees big-city homicide detective Sophie Haas (Caroline Peters, Tatort) “promoted” from her previous life as a homicide detective in Cologne to be the chief of a backwoods police force in the fictional town of Hengasch (“Hanging Ass”). To its residents, this remote village in the Eifel mountains isn’t exactly teeming with open cases. Or anything, really. In fact, the police department’s two officers – Sgt. Dietmar Schäffer (Bjarne Mädel, Crime Scene Cleaner) and Officer Barbel Schmied (Meike Droste, Tatort) are more caretakers than overworked sleuths. But Sophie is determined to make her mark and, on her very first day, she latches onto a local cold case – an unsolved disappearance that, thanks to her dogged investigation, turns out to have been a murder!
And thus begins Sophie’s new life as a small-town sleuth, pursuing every lead and leaving no question unasked – much to the chagrin of her deer-in-the-headlights co-workers and the rest of the town, too! She ends up pulling the best out of Schäffer and Schmied, teaching them everything she knows about police work from the ground up.
But the conflicts between Sophie’s big-city ways and Hengasch’s sleepy demeanor aren’t limited to those under her command. Sgt. Schäffer’s wife Heike “Coochie” Schäffer (Petra Kleinert) wears her jealousy on her gossipy sleeve and clearly rules the roost at home. And Sophie’s predecessor, Hans Zielonka (Michael Hanemann, Inspector Dupin), is still kicking around, looking to show Sophie that her big city police skills aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. But Sophie has little time for such nonsense because there always seems to be a juicy case hiding just over the next hill. And, just like a bloodhound, Sophie leaves no stone unturned in her pursuit of the truth.
During Homicide Hills’ original three-season run, Caroline Peters won three Best Actress awards for her role as Sophie Haas (Two Bavarian TV Awards and one German Screen Actors Award).
