The richly atmospheric Swedish limited series Blackwater, starring Rolf Lassgård and a gaggle of talented Augusts, premieres December 30^th, 2025 on MHz Choice!

Set against the stark, evocative landscapes of northern Sweden, Blackwater unfolds across two time periods – 1973 and 1991 – framing a haunting, multi-layered narrative that blends crime, memory, and community. The story begins on Midsummer’s Eve 1973, when Annie Raft (portrayed as a young woman by Asta Kamma August) and her six-year-old daughter Mia arrive in the remote village of Blackwater with hopes of joining Annie’s boyfriend in a nearby commune. Their plans take a chilling turn when they discover the bodies of two murdered tourists in a tent near a river. This unsolved double murder sends ripples through the close-knit community and becomes a defining trauma for its inhabitants.

Eighteen years later, in 1991, the aftermath of that crime still looms large. Annie – now played by acclaimed actor Pernilla August (To Cook a Bear, The Legacy) – lives with the legacy of that night, working as a teacher and still haunted by unanswered questions. Alba August plays the adult Mia Raft, returning to Blackwater and becoming entangled once again in the unresolved mysteries of their past. The fact that the Raft women are played, respectively, by Pernilla August (as the 1991 version of Annie Raft) and her real-life daughters Asta Kamma August (portaying the 1973 version of Annie) and Alba August (playing Annie’s daughter Mia) adds a rare level of authenticity to the multi-generational story. And as a special bonus, MHz Choice favorite Rolf Lassgård delivers a powerful performance as Birger Torbjörnsson, the local doctor whose life has also been shaped by the long shadow of the killings. His character is a central figure in the community and becomes deeply affected by the unresolved double murder from 1973, carrying its emotional and moral consequences into the later 1991 timeline. Lassgård’s performance adds weight to the series’ exploration of guilt, secrecy and how a single violent event can shape lives over decades.
